Follow all directions on your prescription label.
The first step to managing pain without over-the-counter (OTC) treatments is understanding the risks and benefits. Voltaren gel is a popular OTC alternative for relieving pain but it does have some limitations. It’s recommended to use Voltaren gel as part of your routine to reduce the risk of osteoarthritis pain and stiffness.
For people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) such as Voltaren may be considered, but there’s a higher risk of gastrointestinal issues, including bleeding, ulcers, and perforation. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of the joints, often with a weakened immune system, which can be treated with NSAIDs such as Voltaren gel.
Voltaren gel contains a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The gel is applied to the affected area, typically on the hands, face, or arm. It’s applied directly to the painful area, where it’s absorbed into the bloodstream. This means that the gel has no systemic absorption and thus does not affect the body’s tissues. This can help reduce pain and improve overall quality of life for some people. It’s recommended to use Voltaren gel regularly for at least 12 hours, with a break of up to 5 minutes.
Like other OTC pain relievers, Voltaren gel may cause side effects in some people. These can include gastrointestinal upset, indigestion, bloating, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and headache.
